When exactly did each nation arise, and how did nationalism spread? Is it possible to make distinctions between nationalisms such as ‘ethnic’ and ‘civic’ nationalisms? All these questions being pertinent, they have become somewhat obsolete in their theories about nationalism. With the turn of the century, experts have launched new questions. In particular, the English social psychologist Michael Billig developed the ‘thesis of banal nationalism’ to answer the question: how do nations regenerate here and now? That is, what allows the permanence of national consciousness in contemporary societies?
